A recent 2026 study published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society by researchers at Harvard Medical School has uncovered a possible biological link between gut bacteria, inflammation, environmental chemicals, and depression. At the centre of the research is a gut bacterium called Morganella morganii, which previous studies had already found in higher levels in people with major depressive disorder. Until now, scientists did not know whether this bacterium played a role in depression or was simply present alongside it.

They discovered that when this bacterium interacts with a chemical called diethanolamine (DEA), commonly used in industrial and agricultural products, it produces an altered molecule that activates the immune system.
This immune activation increases inflammatory proteins in the body, particularly one called interleukin-6 (IL-6), which has long been associated with depression and chronic inflammation.
In simple terms, the bacteria appeared to chemically transform an environmental substance into something that could trigger inflammation in the body. This matters because inflammation may now be one of the biological pathways linked to depression.

The Reason Inflammation Matters In Depression
Inflammation is the body’s natural defence system. It helps protect us from infections and injuries. But when inflammation becomes chronic, it can begin affecting the brain and nervous system.
A large review published in Molecular Psychiatry in 2018 found elevated inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, in people with major depressive disorder. These inflammatory chemicals may interfere with neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, both of which help regulate mood, motivation, sleep, and emotional balance.
Interestingly, this also explains why chronic inflammation is often linked with symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, poor concentration, disrupted sleep, and emotional numbness.
